THE
PLANT
Soya (Glycine maxima) is an annually-flowering
plant belonging to the family of leguminous plants
or pulses (peas, beans, etc.). Note that the
soya beans we use in our products are not to
be confused with sprouts of the mungo bean (Phaseolus
mungo), which are green and mistakenly referred
to as soya bean sprouts.
Soya originated in Asia,
where it has been consumed by humans for around
three thousand years in
the form of traditional products like tonyu and
tofu. It started to be cultivated in the Americas
in the early 20th century (the USA, Brazil, Argentina,
etc.) and in Europe more recently.
Over 200 million
tons of soya are produced each year worldwide
and over 2 billion people use
soya in their daily diet. Soya can lay claim
to being humanity’s foremost global food
and western countries have been discovering the
nutritional and dietary virtues of this plant
for the last 20 years.
